Iglesia de Santo Cristo
Descripción
Situada en el barrio Nuevo o barrio del Arrabal, la iglesia del Santo Cristo fue construida entre 1632 y 1640 en sustitución de una ermita medieval que estaba dedicada a la Virgen de la Vega.
La obra, impulsada por le dominico Fray Tomás Gómez, dio como resultado un templo de carácter sobrio, con muros de mampostería y con unas esquinas marcadas por el color rojizo de los sillares de arenisca.
Se trata de una iglesia de una sola nave dividida en tres tramos cubiertos por bóveda vaída y una cúpula semiesférica sobre el crucero.
Cuenta además con un ábside poligonal y con un coro alto situado en los pies de la iglesia cubierto por una bóveda de crucería.
En su interior se custodia la imagen del Santo Cristo realizada en el siglo XIX por el escultor Modesto Pastor, así como la talla más antigua conservada en la ciudad, la Virgen de la Vega de origen románico.
El 14 de septiembre de cada año, con motivo de las fiestas patronales dedicadas al Santo Cristo de la Vega y a Santa María, se celebra una romería en la que participa el obispo de la Diócesis de Teruel y Albarracín.
Esta romería parte de la catedral y que se dirige hasta la iglesia del Santo Cristo en la que se celebra una misa, convirtiéndose así por un día en un importante centro de peregrinación para los habitantes de la Sierra.

Located in the Nuevo neighborhood or Arrabal neighborhood, the Santo Cristo church was built between 1632 and 1640 to replace a medieval hermitage that was dedicated to the Virgen de la Vega.
The work, promoted by the Dominican Friar Tomás Gómez, resulted in a temple of a sober character, with masonry walls and corners marked by the reddish color of the sandstone ashlars.
It is a church with a single nave divided into three sections covered by a hollow vault and a hemispherical dome over the transept.
It also has a polygonal apse and a high choir located at the foot of the church covered by a ribbed vault.
Inside is the image of the Holy Christ made in the 19th century by the sculptor Modesto Pastor, as well as the oldest carving preserved in the city, the Virgin of La Vega of Romanesque origin.
On September 14 of each year, on the occasion of the patron saint festivities dedicated to Santo Cristo de la Vega and Santa María, a pilgrimage is celebrated in which the bishop of the Diocese of Teruel and Albarracín participates.
This pilgrimage starts from the cathedral and goes to the church of Santo Cristo where a mass is celebrated, thus becoming an important pilgrimage center for the inhabitants of the Sierra for one day.
